The Wrong Way To Earn A Living

Out of the blue I met this old friend of mine from down south. So we spent our time updating what is going on in our lives all these while. She told me she use to have a catering business ( for weddings ) as her side income ( before her retirement ). It was a lucrative business and they ( she and her business partner ) made a lot of money. She told me, they got 100% profit out of this catering business. She went on to tell me that when they had a few kenduris in a day they start playing games with the hosts. Sometimes there is not enough rendang in this particular kenduri, they pinched some rendang from the other kenduri. And if there were not enough they will just give the hosts excuses that they are on the way ......which they never did!

I was so furious when I heard this story . How could they cheat on their customers, they pay their money and they have their dignity to defend, for if there's not enough food for their guests, they will be embarassed! If anybody does that to me I will never forgive them until I'm on the death bed! ( dah fail dah tu, kata boleh maaf kesalahan orang, ni tunggu nak mati baru nak maaf! ).

Some unlucky hosts dapat malu when the reception is at its peak and the guests are still arriving , there were no food left. Some has just rice and dalca left ( not too bad as compared to the above ). One kenduri I attended, the host found out that the workers are hiding 1 big pot of rendang in the van. Maybe the caterer asked them to keep for the night function!

There are always two sides of any story. From some of the caterers (the honest ones ), many complain that some hosts order food for 1 thousand guests but they only pay 1/4 downpayments. Caterers must also protect their business, what if they can't pay the other 3/4 payment? and some don't pay the balance at all. So they have to supply less than what the hosts order to minimise their loss. Another problem is some order food for 600 pax, but they invite 900 guests, thinking ( hoping ) that the other 300 won't turn up. How ma? That's cheating too!

But whatever it is, people will despise those who cheat in their business. That is no way to earn an honest living!

two sides of the story...but still we don't want to get cheated by the supplier when we put all our hopes and faith that they can deliver on the day of our event. but on the other hand as you say, don't invite more than what you ordered. The trick is to know how to balance between the guests and the food. You may end up with too little or too much food. Planning is the key...
